GMS – No Rules – Spirit Zone (Germany)

GMS are kind of like cartoon characters who get zapped into a studio and proceed to make tunes with the sole intention of moving feet, kicking up dust, and releasing endorphins all the while. They get a lot of stick for sounding the same all the time, but when it comes to the dancefloor mayhem moments, you can always rely on these guys to do the business.

In fact, this album showcases sides of the GMS sound we’ve not overly heard before. Life After shows a subtle sense of melodic manipulation, I’m On Mars showing ther sense of humour (complete with kick ass groove and daft samples), and No Rules suggests a more progressive, textured approach to their music.

As well as this there are still the killers – notably Juice By GMS, a belter in anyone’s book. Nothing quite comes close to the recent single Shrek – also on Spirit Zone – which for whatever reason isn’t featured here. It’s not a bad album, but it’s not a great album.

GMS are like junk food – extremely enjoyable at the time, but largely unmemorable afterwards.
