Out Of Sight / Metrotek

YoYo / BNE (Israel)

I missed Time Lock’s album last year, and the chief surprise for me is that Felix used to be in PPS Project. Evidence of that hard gnarly style is still here, with more attitude than you may expect on a 12” release on an Israeli label. On Out Of Sight, the bass is hard and bustling, the noises over the top are cleaner than a freshly-enema’d pornstar’s backside, and the movement is smooth and never forced. A big, cavernous-superclub-friendly melody eases in, and doesn’t quite mash before it eases out again, and I have to say, it then maintains this atmosphere of building up to something, without blowing its load and peaking in a crescendo of melody. Timelock I’m trying to enjoy, but it opens with that all too familiar vocodey thing that’s on more CDs these days than a barcode, and is plagued with vocals like Vietnam is plague dwith Avian Flu. It stopstarts nicely, the sounds are interesting, and the movement is shockingly original, but…. I mean, seriously, I would pay top money for a version of that without the vocals everywhere. It’s a case of an original, exciting tune marred by an additional channel that nobody asked for. At the end of the day, anyone playing off vinyl will be delighted with this, it’s not run of the mill and it also ought to fit nicely into many a crossover DJ’s box.
