Various Etsi Candy Flip (Greece)
I know were a bit late on this one. Candyflip sent one out for review earlier in the summer, but it never arrived and as we werent expecting it, we never said it didnt arrive (we didnt know it was supposed to) Anyway its all terribly complicated, but luckily here we are with eight cuts of technoid trance malarkey with a certain sci-fi atmosphere riding right the way through. Das Medikaments Kikma sets things off with heavy-percussion and glitch-like computer stabs over an almost wild west feel, and Drones Contagious which is a heavy, deep, growly bit of bad mood trance thats scary and kicking in equal measures. Malice in Blunderland from Bent Sentient vs. Pied Piper Paul is, along with contender for wonderfully daft track name of the year, starts sparse and desolate but gets incredibly twisted with abstract sounds and fairytale samples making for a real acid nightmare vibe. Voices of Electra by Unearthed is wicked, its effortlessly intricate and brings in slices of jazz, techno, house and trance, as well as an orgasm and a couple of old S-Express samples. It escalates into a starwars battletastic noisefest, without losing its cute prog-tech backbone. Wizzy Noise can do no wrong, and they do no wrong here either with Process. Beats fall into place like metallic snowflakes, the music changes almost of its own accord, and the varied and original sounds are a delight. Eargears Dependence is what dance music will sound like in a hundred years, its bizarro-fetish-disco with a really odd couple of sounds running through and brilliantly opposed melodies to make you wonder what the hells going on. Some very clever and intricate stuff here, and that sparse and desolate vibe will have you coming back for more every time.
