2001 saw a rash of chillout compilations and not just on the psytrance scene. After a year of TV-advertised chillage on European and US markets, the question has to be asked: do we really need another laidback chilled album? Luckily, Chillum is different enough to set itself apart from the pack. Think dubby, ethno, breath-unites-us-all type stuff: its a perfectly mixes and well produced CD, with a good spread of dub, hip hop, beatless and trancey tunes that never falls into cliché-ridden chillout hell. The absence of any big names might make some treat with caution, but the adventurous out there will be rewarded with a classy, tribal, organic ambient experience.
