A nice crossover-friendly 12” from the crew at London’s TipWorld, worthy of mention alone in the fact that they’re still supporting the vinyl medium. Retro Active is all about the topend, with a good couple of riffs up there taking care of things. It’s not a stormer of a tune, and doesn’t really go through the roof, but what it does it does well. Status featured on the recent ImagiNations Night CD, and starts with an awesome, long sample from the start of Fight Club – one of my favourite (and undersampled) films, and therefore I am pretty much immediately sold. It’s a big question whether you’ll like it, as it’s divided opinion like nothing else, but for my money it’s a winner – it moves nicely, briging in little melodic spurts and flurries, and hooks itself on a high-end riff but whose impact and effectiveness you can’t doubt. With a shortage of vinyl releases, you may be at a loss for what to mix this with, but all due credit to Tip for their support of the medium with new artists, two tunes with great crossover potential.
